Situated to the northeast of Erode town in Tamil Nadu, is the Excel group of institutions, which includes the autonomous Engineering college. The College is located on the Salem-Kochi Highway, Pallakkapalayam, Tamil Nadu 638008, India.

The college has a few airframes in its collection, the most notable of which is a Douglas C-47 Dakota and a MiG-23 BN. On this page we take a look at the Dakota in Detail.

The Dakota made its appearance at the college sometime around April 2014 and has been located there ever since. The aircraft was devoid of engines and any kind of identification markings. The origin of this aircraft is a mystery. One guess is that this aircraft is came from the Border Security Force campus at Yelahanka. The BSF had Dakota VT-CYX sold in an auction sometime in 2011. The aircraft was subsequently seen stored in Bengaluru, supposedly heading for a restaurant. However, the plans came to naught and the fate of the Dakota is unknown. The timing of its disappearance does coincide with the appearance of this C-47 at Erode.

The Excel College Dakota lacks engines, perhaps they were sold to other institutions or maybe they are being used for instructional purposes somewhere else. In place of the engines are some tastefully mocked-up cowlings and fake propellers.

The aircraft had been sporting a white /blue /brown paint scheme for years, but no traces of its previous life. Till some enterprising sleuth manages to get information from records or a data plate, we have to keep guessing that this is VT-CYX.
